Black refugees ask if Utah will really accept them

This was the funniest article I have seen about the relocation effort (because that is what it is turning out to be).

"So far the local community has welcomed the refugees with open arms, although they say they face an adjustment to life in Utah, stronghold of the socially conservative Mormon Church."

If "accept" them means allowing them throw Mardi Gras parties, buy liquor after 3 pm, or even wear shorts before lunch, I doubt they will. If accepting them means putting them to work caring for their many children from multiple wives, then probably so. Those black folks have no idea what they are getting into. I doubt hiphop is sold in the music stores.

Funniest line had to be chris rock "George Bush hates midgets."

Wow, isn't that a culture clash. New Orleans vs. Provo. Couldn't they have sent them to Las Vegas or New Jersey?

Salt Lake City is relatively cosmopolitan and while certainly not New Orleans or San Francisco, it isn't as 'conservative' as you might think. Provo is however. My grandparents live near Provo, and I went to try and find a bar there several years ago. There are not any. Their are (were actually, havn't been there for several years) 3 'private clubs' where Alcohol is served and the 'club members' will happily make a stranger a guest so you can enter.

Strange place.

One interesting facet though about Utah, is despite it's conservatism it is probably the state with the greatest amount of collective in depth knowledge of other cultures. The mormon practice of sending out missionaries all over the world (even New Orleans) means that a whole lot of people there have spent signifigant time in other environments. I expect that while refugees from New Orleans will have some problems with racism, it will be much less than they would expect, and they will find passionate defenders as well.

Funny story, I knew this morman who bowled for his mission they sent him to Utah. I asked him if there were any bowling allies in the town he was going to, and he said there were two (He had looked up this information apparently)
