While this was a good movie, this was not one of Johnny Depp's better roles. Johnny Depp played a writer who was going through a tough time in his life. The plot thickens when Depp's character meets a Mississippi corn farmer, who blames Depp's character for stealing his story. I loved the story, the movement of the plot, and the villains of the movie where interesting to watch and listen to. I felt the movie was a little weak on the videography side of the movie equation. The scenes where well done, but most of the tension was generated by the plot, not the video itself. I watched some of the commentary, and it explained some things that I missed during the movie, so I would definitely suggest that, if you want to know some of the more subtle facts about the movie. Overall this movie is going to be better than most movies you pick up to watch.
I have not seen many of the staple gangster movies of this century, so my comments may change over time as I seem more movies in this genre. The thing that makes GoodFellas such as good movie is that it is based on the real life story of Henry Hill. You might ask, how this guy was able to make a movie about his life in the mob? I don't know the many of the details, but Henry Hill was under the witness protection program for a while, then was kicked out for drug charges. Once that happened, why worry about if people know who you are. You might as well try to profit from you life. The characters where not over the top, they were believable, and true to life. The true natural, strong characters , and the evolution of the characters in this movie make this movie a winner. If you where going to have a mob movie weekend, I would either start off with this one or end with this one. It is good enough not to leave out, and real enough to provide some counterweights to the fictional mob movies you will see during the weekend. If you have not seen this one, put it on you list.
